Arnold Schwarzenegger by J Wright

Ahh, Arnold and Mr.Freeze from BTAS mash-up. The definitive portrayal of the character and the worst. How Arnold didn't win an Academy award for this we will never know...

Breaking Bad by J Wright

I did a moleskine sketch this week and fooled around with it in photoshop. Had fun playing with the colors and textures. I've never seen Breaking Bad, (it's in my Netflix queue, put down your pitchforks) but it looks filthy, and this guy, Aaron Paul as I gathered from researching reference, looks like he curses a lot.

Literature by J Wright

I love the Harry Potter books and films. I've never drawn anything from them, so I decided I'd take a crack at Harry. I kept it with just pencils this time around because I liked how the pencils were coming along and I just took a little extra time to tighten them up rather than ink a rough sketch. Plus my best brush is not so much my best brush any more, and I want this to be inked properly.

Aliens By J Wright

When I think "Aliens" I think conspiracies, when I think conspiracies I think X-Files! I only ever watched an episode of the series here and there, but recently decided I wanted to watch the series in it's entirety and am nearly finished with season one, and it is excellent. Why isn't there an X-Files ongoing comic... and why am I not drawing it?

Pixar by J Wright

Wall-E & Eve. Wall-E is one of my favorite Pixar flicks. The story telling is amazing, considering no actual words are spoken by the protagonist.

Mad Men by J Wright

A Jon Hamm(ish) Mad Man... lighting a cig. They work at an ad agency right? I bet they sell the hell outta some smokes. I've never seen this show. Enjoy! I'm off to Colorado for a week! Later suckers!

P.S. I'm going to be tagging my posts with "J Wright" from here on out, because there is another Jason Wright that went to Kubert who is a working colorist, and I get confused for him a lot. Just last week I was asked to sign some books he had colored at this shop signing I was at. So Yeah.

Avengers by Jason Wright

Thor! I haven't drawn a lot of Thor... but he's probably my favorite Avenger, and I couldn't pass up a chance to throw down some Asgardian ink!

Batgirl by J Wright

I'm not super familiar with Batgirl, so I drew a non-specific female Bat-themed character. Playing catch up now that I'm good n' moved in, so I played this one fast and loose, but I think it turned out pretty fun.

New Wolverine

The Morrison/Quitely take on Wolverine is one of my favorites. They made him a supporting character again, and he was short, ugly, hairy, and pissed off all the goddamn time. X-Men stories had been very Wolverine centric up til this point and, to me, this returned him to the bad ass character that he really is. After seeing this, it's hard for me to see him running around in long underwear and a mask. Also, Logan needs to be drinking beer and smoking cigars all the time. All. The. Time.

Dwight Kills Ava

Dwight is my favorite Sin City character. Well...post bullet in the face, plastic surgery Dwight. This sketch was...interesting to do. It didn't turn out quite like I planned, and then the gray areas in the ink screwed with my leveling, so this isn't an accurate scan of the piece in my opinion, but it's the best I could muster. In other news, inking like Miller on Sin City is for the birds, I tried to emulate the look, but I probably should have just stuck with my own method.

Batman T.A.S.

The best American cartoon series. This was how I was really introduced to Batman. I resisted comics as a kid, and when I got into them it was just Marvel, I thought all the DC characters were sissies...still do, except for Batman. I loved how geometric the design was in this show, and they actually used black! It was like no other cartoon I had seen, all the other action cartoons had the same basic 80's G.I. Joe look that just wasn't original. I loved how simple this show kept things and yet how bad ass it was.

Darkseid

I know nothing of this character. But I had a lot of fun drawing this one...it's actually my second go...the other sketch I did was this weird upshot and he had a tiny head...but I thought it made him looks massive...but I made a oops when I was inking and ended up just writing profanity all over it. Then I thought...the only interesting part of Darkseid is his face...soooo...portrait style!

Boba Fett

Boba Fett was pretty cool. I was never a big Star Wars fan, but I thought it was interesting how big of a following Boba Fett has when he has less than 5 minutes of total screen time in those movies. But some of the coolest characters are just supporting ones... like Wolverine in the 80's, and some other ones...

8 Bit Wolverine

I hated comics. In 2nd grade, everyone stopped collecting & trading baseball and basketball cards, and started with comics and comic cards. At recess they pretended to be Marvel Super Heroes instead of Ninjas. I hated it. I wanted to ninja kick my friends in the kidneys, not pretend to be Mr. Fantastic casting a spell on Wolverine. I made fun of all the nerds and used everyone's lack of interest in basketball cards to trade them some lame ass Marvel Cards for all of their Michael Jordan cards.

I already drew all the time; Ghostbusters, Monsters, and Nintendo characters. I loved the manuals that came with Nintendo games, and would draw all the stuff from them I could. What's funny is that I would draw stories, I'd draw one scene on one piece of paper, and then the next scene on another piece of paper. I didn't realize that I was essentially making comics, I just didn't grasp the idea of panels yet. One day, I was hanging out at the boss nerd's house (the guy who converted everyone to comics) and he pulled out his new NES game, Wolverine. He stabbed people, I loved it. So I decided in order to get back at all those nerds, I would become an even bigger nerd, collecting so many comics that it would put their collections to shame. Sticking with comics when everyone else moved on to sports, girls, drugs, alcohol, and careers... eventually I would attend The Super Nerd Academy ( Joe Kubert School ). I totally showed those losers...

His Airness.

I LOVED the topic for this week, bravo Adam. There really was no other option for me, MJ being my all-time favorite athlete. I've really dug the topics lately, I think it's in an artist's best interests to expand their horizons and keep diversifying the things they draw/paint. I'd rather be challenged to draw something outside my comfort zone (Native American topic) than to keep drawing the same things over and over again. This week's topic, interestingly enough, correlates perfectly with the idea that, if you push yourself outside your comfort zone, you will get better faster. I hope everyone digs.

Native American

I was dreading doing this week's topic, until I started working on it. I admit this isn't anything special or any person in particular, just a guy standing there, but damn was it fun to draw and ink. I was at a loss for what to do, so I just did some quick reference, found some interesting images, and this ended up coming out on my end. I didn't bother erasing the pencils or adjusting the levels too much because it gave it a raw feeling, and felt that was appropriate for the subject matter. Before this drawing I didn't really have any interest on doing something native american, but now I can't wait to do another!

Emma Frost

I wanted to do some more on this piece, but I had quite a busy weekend and not much time between all I had going on to do this full up. Hopefully I'll revisit it and get it to where I had originally planned. Hope you guys like it thus far.

Tom Skylark and Rover

This week I felt like drawing a Sentinel, so I drew Tom Skylark and his pet Sentinel, Rover. They are from the terrible ending to Morrison's otherwise excellent run on New X-Men. If you haven't read it, check it out, it's the last great superhero book I've read, and I think it's better than Whedon and Cassaday's Astonishing. Anyway, hope you all dig!

Conan!

Conan is medieval right? I mean barbarians were around in medieval times, Conan is a barbarian. Okay it's settled. This was a quickie this week, been wanting to fool around with a ball point pen in the inking stage and I went a little overboard here, but it was a good introduction. I think this was the first time I've ever drawn Conan... hope everyone digs!

The Shadow

I think The Shadow is awesome. Sure his movie sucked, and he hasn't been popular in 60 years, but hey, he had his own radio show once...that's Oprah league for his time. I think it's time someone hired me to draw a new book. *hint hint* owners of The Shadow IP...
