Frank Frazetta by Craig Cermak

Playing catch-up currently. With this one, I wasn't sure what to do and a full scale oil painting in the vein of Frazetta was out of the question, so I tried my hand at Conan, a character Frazetta is associated with. I can't even come close to Frazetta's skills but seeing his work is always inspirational.

Hey, remember Jaguar God?

FIRE AND ICE. Meant to do some painting this week but ran out of some crucial material. Fun going through all my Frazetta stuff for inspiration. Great movie, baller rotoscoping. I only use the word baller to annoy Mooneyham.

So I haven't had the internet at my disposal to look at all the sweet sweet artwork that Frankie Frazets, has to offer.... But I did have Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' with Disaster" LP laying around my room. So I decided to do a sketch based off that badass viking dude.

Everyone loves Death Dealer! How about a Native American Death Dealer? I really wanted to take this topic as an opportunity to mess around with digital painting again. Still seems to be something I can't totally grasp. I think it's the blending technique that gets me, can't really find a way to make it work the same way real paints do. Anyways I decided to re-paint an existing Frazetta layout as an homage and I put a little twist on it with the Native American thing.

I've always been a big fan of Frazetta's black and white stuff and wanted to try and do something along those lines. I did this on watercolor paper so I can add some washes over it another time.

Frazetta's work on Conan sparked my initial interest in both the artist and the character, and got me into fantasy illustration in general. I didn't really know much about him before I went to school, so thanks to Kevin Castaniero for the hard Introduction...

Frazetta drew some of the most amazing women, so I thought I'd try my hand at it.

Frank Frazetta by Ben Dale (after Frank Frazetta)

I recreated one of my favorite Frazetta paintings for this sketch. I didn't spend time making sure it was exactly like the original in every way, but spending a few hours with a masters painting can teach you so much about someone else's drawing theory, color palette, and technique. You can see the original painting here.

Here's Conan with a chick, and Conan's thinking about money for some reason.
