Originally I was going to do a Fritz Lang's Metropolis piece, but I'm not hip enough for that. And I'm on team Clark Kent's Disguise is Perfectly Acceptable and with the Correct Clothing and Posture Nobody will Guess He's Superman.
Figured I'd use this opportunity to draw the new "52" Superman costume for the first time. Drawing it, I don't think it's as bad as I initially thought. Funny thing, when looking through some books for reference, even Jim Lee changed parts of the costume from page to page. I guess he realized that a ton of seams all over the costumes can get difficult to remember. Anyway, I regret not planning out the tones better on this and it really came out differently than intended.
I feel like this one got away from me, so I turned it into a lame joke. Superman's always been a tough character to draw for me. I like some of what I did with this, but not really stoked on it. I'm going to work on trying to make this a decent piece at some point and use this as a rough.
Grant Morrison's All Star Superman is one of my favorite comics. I think it's Superman's Dark Knight Returns. Ever since I read it, Superman's quickly become my favorite Superhero...even over Batman.
Superman saving Jimmy Olsen from the Daily Planet globe that fell off i guess. Anyway, adding color to this and will post that by tomorrow. For now, here is the black and white.
P.s. Now that I see it on the computer, Supes arm looks a little long, but oh well.
I always think it's hard to pull of Superman, and I've never been that satisfied with one I've ever drawn before this sketch. Also I think this picture wouldn't work quite as well without the old school red shorts. I still feel like they're a good design element for the costume.
