Bruce Willis by Troy Hoover

Bruce Willis from the Gorillaz music video "Stylo".  Skin tones get a little muddy on me sometimes, so I might actually like the black and white version better. You can check my deviant art or website to see that version.  Any tips on the coloring aspect are appreciated.

  1. Troy, not sure how you're coloring this but when I color in CMYK I use 20% Y, 20% M as a base flesh color. If the figure tends to be in shadow I add 20% C. You can then add percentages of Cyan to darken it. But I'm old school and tend to use colors in 10% increments.

  2. I think it depends on the type of coloring you're doing. It looks like you're taking a more painterly approach to this one. Personally, if I was "painting" this, I probably wouldn't have adjusted the levels so much. Leaving in brush strokes and such can add to a painted look. As for what you've got; I don't think it's too muddy, but I do think the pink hue you've got on his left side of his face is a little jarring because it's so de-saturated on his right side. That wouldn't be such a big deal if it were on other parts of his body as well. Keep in mind that the light source isn't just going to hit his face, and it sure as hell is going to be a part of your background color. Take a look at your reference, I'm sure it's not as black and white as you drew it and the sun should be hitting more than just his face. I'm not saying you should draw every little background detail, but at least some indication of what's going on with him in the car. Now, I've always been a fan of the idea where more black you have, the less rendering in color you should use. Flat colors with slight gradients work very well with solid black shapes. Take a look at books like "Criminal" or "Hellboy". Anyways, I don't know if this helps or just reminds you of me hovering over your shoulder at good ol' 167, but my final words of advice to you are this, "WE'LL DO IT LIVE! FUCK IT! WE'LL DO IT LIVE!! FUCKIN' THING SUCKS!!"

  3. thought I would add something to this discussion...i think that what Chris is saying is right on, but another thing to think about is that since you have a lot of solid blacks, in your colors you might want to create more depth. if you have inks that show lots of depth, sometimes doing flat colors can contrast nicely...the same goes for the opposite...if you have more flat, black inks, then getting some depth and volume in the colors is a good way of making the colors jump out and fill things out. So, basically, I would try to push the values and color a bit more just to bring everything together more. Another thing you could do is use stronger, more saturated colors in the fg, to push the bg further back. I was also thinking it might've been cool to blur out the bg so it looks like he's moving at speed. ALSO! lol...sorry this is dragging on now, but Ive noticed some people like to level their inks so you can see lots of ink strokes and stuff...i think sometimes this can look cool, but a lot of the time it just gets distracting and takes away from the structure of the drawing...anyway, i like this one and you're choice of drawing Bruce Willis from Stylo is awesome. Once I saw you post it up, I was like DAMNNN! cool idea dude.

  4. Thanks for the input guys. I guess I have to decide on what style of coloring I want first and go from there. The other thing is that I don't really color a lot of my drawings so I should probably start coloring more if I want to get better at coloring. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
